For too long, we have been taught that the righteous immediately ascend to heaven to be with God after they die. But this notion is false and has no solid biblical basis. To understand where the righteous souls are going, we must first understand that Heaven is not just one place, but made up of seven entirely different realms.

This concept is reflected in the term “Seventh Heaven,” which implies the existence of seven multiple celestial realms. The seven heavenly realms correspond to God’s seven-day creation plan. Human bodies are locked away from the heavens, but death grants access via a spiritual portal linking the living and dead.
Angels also use this portal to travel between realms, as seen in Jacob’s ladder vision (Genesis 28:12), where angels move between heaven and earth. In this article, I’ll explain the seven heavens and where every good person goes when they die.
The Seven Heavenly Realms
1. The First Heaven: Realm of the Clouds and the Atmosphere
The First Heaven is the mortal realm on earth, where humanity resides in the physical world. High-ranking archangels like Gabriel supervise, monitoring human activities and reporting to the Creator. Angels manage snow, ice, and rain, releasing them according to God’s command.
These angels include the Cherubim, who govern the winds, the Seraphim, who oversee the weather, and the Ophanim, who regulate the changing of the seasons. Prophets like Enoch and Isaiah gained insight into the world’s workings here, with Enoch receiving direct revelations from God (Enoch 3:1-3, 5:1-2) about the nature of the world and humanity’s place within it.
2. The Second Heaven: Realm of the Imprisoned Fallen Angels
The second heaven is a realm where the first batch of fallen angels, who fought the war of the heavens alongside Lucifer, are imprisoned. These imprisoned fallen angels will remain there until the Day of Judgment, where they will face their eternal punishment. The highly ranked Archangel Raphael rules over this realm, enforcing justice and carrying out the Creator’s will to keep things in order.
This realm is also the source of the concept of hellfire, which is a place reserved for rebellious angels rather than humans. According to Enoch, the Creator revealed to him the imprisoned angels who had launched the first heavenly war, led by Lucifer (Helel).
3. The Third Heaven: Realm of the Garden of Eden
The third heaven is the realm of the Garden of Eden, also known as paradise. The entrance to the Garden of Eden is guarded by giant cherubim with flaming swords. This realm was once inhabited by Adam and Eve before their fall. From this realm, one can see God’s throne.
According to 2 Enoch 5:1-6:3, this realm is characterized by lush vegetation, a massive tree known as the Tree of Life, and rivers, which represent eternal life and harmony. Interestingly, the third heaven is also where the righteous souls will go after the day of the great judgment.
The Apocalyptic Book of Adam and Eve, Chapter 28, records God’s promise to Adam and Eve that only their righteous descendants would return to this place, which is paradise. Yahusha later mentioned this assurance just before he passed away, saying, “You will be with me in paradise.”

The apostle Paul’s experience of being caught up to the third heaven in 2 Corinthians 12:2-4 provides further insight into this realm. He witnessed the glory of God and heard unspeakable words, gaining a glimpse into the workings of the divine in the spiritual realm. The highly ranked archangel Haniel watches over this realm, guiding souls through their journey.
4. The Fourth Heaven: Realm of the Imprisoned Grigori Watchers
The fourth heaven is the realm associated with the prison of the Watchers (Grigori), as described in the Book of Enoch. These fallen angels descended into the earthly realm and mingled with human women, causing widespread corruption and chaos (2 Enoch 7:1-2). Their actions were the root cause of humanity’s current corruption.
Other ancient texts, such as the Book of Jubilees and the Testament of Reuben, provide more perspectives on this realm. The fourth heaven is overseen by the highly ranked archangel Michael, who administers order in this realm until the day of judgment.
5. The Fifth Heaven: The Realm of the Archangels
The fifth heaven is the realm of the dwelling place of the archangels, where the highest order of angels reside. It is also in this realm that the watchers failed to keep their estate, abandoning their proper abode to mingle with human women (Jude 1:6-7, 2 Peter 2:4).

According to Enoch, these archangels serve as messengers of God, carrying out the divine will and governing the celestial bodies. Under the leadership of the royal trio of Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, these archangels keep the universe in balance and supervise the operations of the heavens. The fifth heaven is a spiritually significant location that provides a thorough understanding of angelic hierarchy, divine leadership, and celestial secrets.
6. The Sixth Heaven: Realm of the Celestial Choirs
The sixth heaven is a divine realm where celestial choirs worship the Creator constantly. There is an extraordinary display of heavenly music, with choirs singing hymns and praises to the Creator. This realm represents the beauty and harmony of the divine, showcasing the role of celestial choirs in worship and adoration. Enoch’s experience in this realm deepened his understanding of God’s nature and the role of the heavenly hosts in worship and service.
Furthermore, this realm was previously associated with Lucifer (Helel), who served as the leader of the musical angels and guided the celestial choirs in worship and praise of the Most High.
Given that, before his rebellion against his Creator, Lucifer was a highly esteemed and exalted Cherub. His former role as a musical choir master and his stay in the 6th heaven may have contributed to the association of the number (666) with him and other occult groups who worship him.
7. The Seventh Heaven: The Throne Room of the God
The seventh heaven is the highest and most sacred realm, where the Creator resides in unparalleled glory. This realm is home to the throne room of God, the epicentre of divine authority. No one can see the face of the Creator (Exodus 33:20), as its presence is shrouded in brilliant light. Only a select few have been granted direct access, including Yahusha, Enoch, and highly ranked archangels like Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.
As one enters the throne room, radiant light fills the air, and the divine presence becomes palpable. The sweet scent of incense and celestial music accompany the presence. The throne is a beautiful structure composed of precious metals and stones, encircled by a rainbow, representing divine covenants. Celestial music is a symphony of angelic voices, instruments, and choirs, singing and playing in perfect harmony.
The throne room is also a source of divine power, where God’s will is made manifest, transcending both earthly and divine boundaries. This realm is inhabited by archangels, seraphim, and cherubim, who serve as messengers, guardians, and bearers of divine presence.
The four living creatures with four faces surround and support the throne, and they play an important role in worship (Ezekiel 1:5-14). Scriptural sources, such as Exodus 24:10, Isaiah 6:1-5, and 1 Enoch 14:8-25, describe this realm as a place of great light, with the Holy One sitting on His throne.
Conclusion
The Garden of Eden is where the righteous are stationed to be when they die, following the time of their judgment. All those who have lived through the suffering and pain of this sinful world, but remained righteous, will spend eternity in this realm.
