Before I reveal the real origin of tattoos and makeup, I will provide you with a brief analysis of the makeup and tattoo industry, just so you can see the impact it is having on humans. The tattoo industry is expected to grow from $2.22 billion in 2024 to $4.83 billion in 2032. In the United States, 21% to 40% of young adults and 20% to 30% of the general population have tattoos.

While this is going on, the Bible contains at least three passages that strongly oppose the use of tattoos and makeup. Despite this evidence, many Christians choose to disregard it because they firmly believe in the adage “my body, my choice.”

Many women today find it unappealing to maintain their natural appearance. Instead, they believe they must meet certain worldly standards, even if it means expressing themselves in other ways. It is even scarier that none of the world’s 8 to 16 million churches has come together to preach against this act. This is all because Satan, the god of this fallen world, has deceived them into believing lies.

This article will look at the dark history of tattoos and makeup, as well as why the Bible condemned them as sins.

The Dark Origin of Tattoos and Make-up

The use of tattoos and makeup is not a new trend. It actually has a much longer history than Egypt, Rome, and Babylon. The reason you are unaware of this is that the modern Bible versions, commonly used by Christians, have undergone significant edits and omissions. This is why I advise Christians to search the Apocrypha for the additional events that the Bible does not mention.

The fallen angels were the first to teach humanity how to thoroughly prepare and apply makeup and tattoos.  One of the main culprit who was responsible for this was none other than Azazel, the chief leader of the Watchers.

As a chief leader among the Watchers, Azazel is associated with teaching humans various forbidden arts and knowledge, including cosmetics, metalworking, sorcery, idolatry, and the art of warfare, according to ancient texts. Azazel contributed to the end of humanity because, as the Book of Enoch details, his teachings corrupted us.

1 And Azâzêl taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all colouring tinctures. 2 And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways.

1 Enoch 8:1

The Legend of the Jews, written by Rabbi Louis Ginzberg, also detailed the evil works of Azazel.

Then the earth complained about the impious evildoers. But the fallen angels continued to corrupt mankind. Azazel taught men how to make slaughtering knives, arms, shields, and coats of mail. He showed them metals and how to work them, and armlets and all sorts of trinkets, and the use of rouge for the eyes, and how to beautify the eyelids, and how to ornament themselves with the rarest and most precious jewels and all sorts of paints.

Legends of the Jews 3 (Midrash)

As a consequence, the Watchers were imprisoned, with Azazel receiving the most severe punishment of all.

4. And again the Lord said to Raphael: Bind Azâzêl hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dûdâêl, and cast him therein. 5. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there forever, and cover his face that he may not see light. 6. And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire.

1 Enoch 10:4-6

Even after the flood, tattoos, makeup, and every other abomination continued to spread. This was probably because Cain’s great-granddaughter Naamah, Noah’s second wife, brought some Cainites traditions to Ham and Canaan. This was how most of the watchers’ forbidden teachings made it through to generations after the flood.

The ancient Egyptians, who descended from Ham through Canaan, continued to honor their gods with makeup and tattoos. Amunet, a Hathor priestess, had tattoos indicating spiritual connection and status. They used red iron oxide for lip color, kohl for eyeliner, and malachite for eyeshadow, believing that kohl protected them from evil spirits and the sun.

As sin spread throughout the world, Jezebel became well-known for her constant use of makeup. Her impact on King Ahab and Israel is recorded in the Bible. With Jezebel as a pivotal figure, Jehu was chosen by Elijah to put an end to Ahab’s idolatrous rule. Jezebel tried to seduce Jehu with makeup before her execution (2 Kings 9:30-31), but she was killed brutally.

In Jeremiah 4:30, the prophet Jeremiah used the metaphor of a woman putting on makeup to demonstrate the worthlessness of Judah’s attempts to save itself from destruction.

Conclusion

I understand that not everyone will find this message appealing, but think about this. If Azazel wasn’t spared for introducing specific knowledge to humanity, it implies that God didn’t intend for humans to have that knowledge.

As believers, we are reminded that the Holy Spirit resides in our bodies, which are temples that God created. This understanding calls us to honor our physical forms while avoiding actions that prioritize self-glorification over spiritual devotion.

While you’re at it, keep in mind that the eyes are the window to the soul. Your appearance can have an impact on those around you. As a result, you have to think about the effects of your choices.
